This wasn't a big major avoid but just illustrates how, even at the slowest speeds you can sometimes be nearly caught out by the unexpected...

Splitting Lanes is just a dangerous and stupid thing to do.

OK, the practice it self is not the problem, as you said the pedestrian was at fault but you can end up being the one that pays. I will agree, that I do not ride where it is 'necessary' to do this but the time saved is just not worth the chance to me. I possibly would do it if there were other bikes with me and we were all making enough noise to be sure to be heard, but still a few minutes saved is not worth the possible consequences for me.
Also please accept my apology for the word stupid.

I remember those days of cab riding in Thailand......If the cab had no horn ...it was out of commision, because they used no brakes ........just the horn.
Have to say I'm with Rex on the lane splitting, not saying I haven't done it, but the Dragon makes a hell of lot of noise, and they can hear me coming. I only split when the traffic is stopped, not while it's moving.
Anyway be safe out there

cool move white lineing. A legal move in California, it's considered a safe way to stay ahead of traffic for bikers. It's illeagal here in Nevada, too bad. I miss the manuver.

USED to lane split until I saw what can happen when you do. Was on I-5 in So-Cal (in a cage), traffic was moving about 15 MPH. This guy on a bike came scooting up between lanes and the driver of a truck about 3 cars ahead of me decided to open his door. Yep, you got it..... just as the bike got to him. Bike damn near took the guys door off and ended up with some ugly injuries. From that day on I've decided it's just not worth it !!!!!!!!!!!

I spent most of my life growing up in the 3rd world, and lane splitting is just what you do. Sit around long enough, and you will see cars doing it

Yea, in my days in Japan, bikes went to the front of the line. Difference is that they all know what to do over there and the drivers know to look for them.

When I was younger and more stupid I rode in the middle everyday on the streets of New York. For the most part it payed off in time saved but there was always those jerks in cars who were angry they were grid locked. They would open their car doors to scare you then close them right before you got there. It happened almost everyday. I quit riding the middle after I had a near miss. I was pushed into a 18 wheelers tire and it ripped off my brake lever; I was real lucky that I was not killed. Live and learn I guess.

ND, I didn't think lane splitting was legal in TX.
November 24, 2010 2:12 AM PST
We can do it legally over here - though I generally only do it either if traffic is at a standstill or if someone else is riding with me (that safety in numbers bit) and actually prefer not to as it raises my blood pressure!!!!. Plus there is a risk if anything happens that I could be held 50/50 liable with regards to insurance.
For some reason though I ALWAYS breathe in!!!!!!!!! It just makes it easier to get through the gap lol (o:

I don't know. I know the boy does it legally in California, but I keep getting a visual of a guy that is PO'd and opening the drivers/passengers door, or cutting over and rapidly decreasing the space....No, I don't think so. I'll wait just like everyone else. Just my two puny pennies worth...LOL.

Like Choco, its legal here in Ireland too, you can fail your motorcycle test if you get caught in traffic and there is room to go forward, there is a rule here called "motorcycle progression". I suppose its just the way you are taught riding here, lane splitting is normal, and in fairness 90% of car drivers recognize the fact...the other 10% of assholes lose their wing mirrors (accidentally).... but Choco is right on the responsibility for an accident...usually here it is 80% car...20% motorcycle...I know that percentages don't matter if you're dead, but lane splitting involves low speed,so death is seldom.
